Game 2.
If someone had told me in advance that Brett Myers would provide the key moment in game 2, I probably would have thought it quite possible with comments about being able to get some key strikeouts at important moments. If I had been told in advance that Brett Myers would provide the key moment while at the plate I think I would have started talking about about the involuntary commitment of whoever said that.
However that’s exactly what happened. Shane Victorino will get the headlines, and deservedly so, for his slam, but Myers 9 pitch walk two batters earlier set it all up. If he hadn’t fought his way through that, the inning would have ended then. The whole at bat and the crowd getting into it and cheering him on clearly rattled Sabathia. (Shame on the TBS crew for not mentioning Burt Hooten at that point.) Really the whole thing was astonishing.
The Phillies haven’t played great ball so far, but they’ve got a couple breaks at key moments in these two games and they’ve taken advantage of them. In a 162 game season you can’t count on that, but in a short series that can be the difference between going on and going home. Right now they’re looking good. Hopefully Moyer can go out there on Saturday and drive the Brewers nuts with his usual low speed junk.
